Dimethylacetamide (DMAC) at 120°C is used to dissolve polyamic acid precursors for polyimide film production. PFA heaters in this service experience environmental stress cracking when trace water (0.5%) is present. Quantitative analysis from 11 polyimide film plants shows that PFA with amorphous phase content above 50% (crystallinity below 50%) fails by stress cracking at 1.5% strain after 2000 hours. Effaith Cynnwys Dŵr ar Straen Critigol

For polyimide production where water is generated during imidization, maintain DMAC water content below 0.3% to protect PFA heaters.

Gwella Crisialaeth trwy Anelio
Post-molding annealing increases crystallinity. Standard PFA as-molded: 45-50% crystalline. Annealed at 160°C for 8 hours: 55-60% crystalline. Annealed at 180°C for 4 hours: 58-62% crystalline (but risk of surface degradation). For DMAC service with 0.5% water, specify annealed PFA with crystallinity >55% gan DSC.

For heated DMAC (0.5% water) at 120°C in polyimide film production, specify PFA heaters with crystallinity >55% (amorffaidd<45%) by DSC, annealed at 160°C for 8 hours minimum. Require bent strip testing per ASTM D1693 in DMAC/0.5% water at 120°C, 2% strain, with no cracks visible at 20x magnification after 2000 hours. For wall thickness, 2.0mm is adequate for straight heaters; 2.5mm recommended for bent configurations. When requesting quotations, provide DMAC water content, heater geometry (straight or bent), and expected strain from thermal cycling. The premium for high-crystallinity annealed PFA (20-30% over standard) is justified by elimination of stress cracking failures in continuous polyimide film production where unscheduled downtime costs $10,000-50,000 per hour. For facilities that cannot control water content below 0.5%, consider external heating (jacketed vessels) instead of immersion PFA heaters.
